How
have you dealt with your hearing loss?
Recent
studies of hearing loss have concluded that it
is more widespread than previously believed. There are over 30 million
Americans suffering from some form of hearing loss. It was discovered
that men were more than five times as likely as women to have hearing
loss.
Hearing
loss is the third most common chronic condition among older Americans,
after hypertension and arthritis. It can be caused by exposure to
loud noises over a long period of time, infections, heart conditions
or stroke, head injuries, tumors, heredity, or changes in the ear
that are related to aging. Sadly enough, surveys have determined
that only one person in five with hearing loss wears a hearing
aid. Medicare does not cover the cost of a hearing
aid. Of those people who do have a hearing loss and
have insurance benefits for hearing aids, about 30% do not wear
them, for one reason or another, on a daily basis, even though a
hearing device should be worn daily.
If
you have a hearing problem, it would be wise to
be assessed by a trained audiologist/hearing instrument specialist.
