Recent
studies of hearing loss have concluded that it is more widespread
than previously believed. There are over 30 million Americans suffering
from some form of hearing loss. It was discovered that men were
more than five times as likely as women to have hearing loss.
Hearing
loss is the third most common chronic condition among older Americans,
after hypertension and arthritis. It can be caused by exposure to
loud noises over a long period of time, infections, heart conditions
or stroke, head injuries, tumors, heredity, or changes in the ear
that are related to aging. Sadly enough, surveys have determined
that only one person in five with hearing loss wears a hearing aid.
Medicare does not cover the cost of a hearing aid. Of those people
who do have a hearing loss and have insurance benefits for hearing
aids, about 30% do not wear them, for one reason or another, on
a daily basis, even though a hearing device should be worn daily.

you have a hearing problem, it would be wise to be assessed by a
